Incredible Quotes From Literature

By Madeleine Jones

“There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”

Historical Interests

History is never dull and there is plenty to learn...

The Medieval West

My research into the Medieval West spans from the crowning of Charlemagne to the Reformation. I specifically concentrate on France, giving special attention to the Cathars and the University of Paris.

Russian & Slavic Culture

Russia is surely fascinating. I'm keenly interested in Russian intellectual history, especially of the conservative variety. Also fond of reading about the Russian Orthodox Church, especially in the 19th century.

Modern European History

From the French Revolution to the end of WWII. Focal points include: Romanticism, urban history, celebrating Christmas, music and art, medievalism, food and drink as well as religion.

The History of Germany

Currently, my research focuses on German history, especially in the late 19th century. Topics of interest include: King Ludwig II, Bavaria, Christmas Markets, Richard Wagner, the Reformation, medieval saints, the various histories of Austria, Alsace and Switzerland and the development of the printing press.

Journalism

I Love Learning Languages

One of the highlights of my life is learning languages. Keep reading to discover the many European languages I'm studying.

Germanic

German is a fantastic language - but the fun doesn't stop there. I'm interested in Old and Middle English, as well as Old Norse and Icelandic.

Latin & Romance

I'm currently completing an evening course from the Univeristy of Queensland in Latin. Afterwards, I plan to tackle French and Italian!

Russian

At a high beginner or low intermediate level. Have a vast interest into Slavic languages and cultures.
